We're continually growing here at Eastern, and more virtual interviews have begun. We know that interviewing can be stressful, so here are some tips for anyone preparing for a virtual interview.

Virtual interviews over platforms have become commonplace in today's digital age. Whether you're interviewing for a job, internship, or educational opportunity, mastering the art of the Zoom interview is essential. Here are five top tips to help you shine during your next virtual interview:

Prepare Your Technology:

It's crucial to feel confident in your technology before the interview. Ensure you have the necessary tools that work smoothly, including testing your internet connection, webcam, microphone, and any required software, such as Zoom. Ensure your device is plugged in, charged, and positioned in a stable, well-lit location. This preparation will give you the confidence to focus on your interview.

Dress Appropriately:

Remember, a Zoom interview is just as professional as an in-person one. Dress professionally from head to toe, even if only visible from the waist up. Choose solid colors and avoid busy patterns that might be distracting on camera. Looking polished and put-together will make a positive impression.

Mind Your Background:

Pay attention to your background and surroundings. Choose a quiet, clutter-free space with neutral or professional-looking decor. Avoid busy or distracting backgrounds that could divert attention away from you. Use virtual backgrounds provided by Zoom to maintain a clean, professional look if needed.

Maintain Eye Contact and Body Language:

During the interview, maintain good eye contact by looking directly into the webcam rather than at your screen. Sit straight with good posture and use hand gestures appropriately to express enthusiasm and engagement through your body language, conveying interest and confidence.

Practice and Rehearse:

Practice possible interview inquiries. Rehearse your responses aloud, focusing on clear and concise answers that highlight your skills and experiences. Know your resume and be ready to discuss your experiences and qualifications confidently. Consider conducting mock interviews over Zoom to get comfortable with the format.

Be On Time and Be Yourself:

Treat the Zoom interview with the same professionalism as an in-person meeting. Log in early to test your setup and ensure everything is in order. Lastly, remember to be yourself and let your personality shine through. Authenticity goes a long way in making a positive impression.

In summary, prepare your technology, dress appropriately, consider your background, maintain eye contact and good body language, practice and rehearse, arrive on time, and be yourself. These tips will prepare you to navigate and excel in your upcoming virtual interview. Good luck!
